Sönke Wortmann's successful epic tells of fictional circumstances of the unexpected World Cup victory by the national football team of the young FRG 1954:While his idol and substitute father Helmut Rahn leaves for Switzerland with the national team in the summer of ′54, 11-year-old Matthias Lubanski experiences the unfortunate return of his biological father from Russian captivity in Essen miners' settlement. The problems between the family and the overwhelmed returnee combine with Rahn's difficulties in not being set up by his trainer Sepp Herberger. This double father's story is joined by that of the newly married Munich sports reporter Paul Ackermann, who takes his initially disinterested wife Annette on a business trip to Switzerland.
