When old fisherman Boman drowns on a stormy night, his widow and daughter Gerd are left alone in their Bohuslän cottage. Their neighbor, old Jansson, takes advantage of their accident and has to arrange for eviction, because he has an old debt bond on Boman that the widow cannot pay. The widow Boman's foster son Harry is a worker at a machine factory in Gothenburg and returns home and is informed of all the accidents. In addition, he notices that Gerd, whom he loves, does not treat him with the same warmth as before. She has been charmed by the old man Jansson's son Charlie, who recently returned home from the USA where he reaped both gold and glory as a boxer. Charlie has promised Gerd marriage and she will follow him back to America. Mother Karin and Harry move to Gothenburg. In America, Gerd discovers what Charlie's beautiful promises have been worth. He neglects her for other women and forbids her to write home to his mother, who, of course, worries about her daughter's fate. Harry manages to obtain permission from his boss to travel to New York on behalf of the company, and there he seeks out Gerd and holds Charlie accountable for his actions. The men decide to settle their deals in the boxing ring. Harry wins the match and Charlie has to accept that Gerd follows Harry back to Sweden. At home, old man Jansson is dying and is seized by remorse. He sends word to mother Karin that the old debt was in fact fully indebted, but that the letter of indebtedness has unjustly returned to his hands. Jansson returns the farm to the widow at the same time as she receives a telegram that Harry and Gerd are on their way home to perfect her and her happiness. (Processing of programs and reviews.)
