Martin Strong is privileged to help a lady in distress, Gwendoline Gordon. Soon after he is left a racing stud by an old friend. He has formerly hated racing, but as Gwendoline lives on the scene of action he begins to take a keen interest in his horses. Wingate, an unscrupulous man and trustee to Gwendoline's estate, wishes to marry her, but she rejects him. He grows jealous of Martin, and, finding that he cannot alienate the two, suceeds in bribing the jockey of Martin's horse to lose the race. Gwendoline notes the fraud and takes over "Scarlet Lady" to train herself. Wingate compels Gwendoline to go in with a big fraud conditional on "Scarlet Lady" losing. Likewise Gwendoline will lose every penny. She apparently agrees, but on the day of the race orders the jockey to ride to win. A desperate attempt by Wingate at the last moment fails, and the race is won. Gwendoline's turf career is by no means at an end, but her future operations will be transacted under a new name - Mrs Martin Strong. (BFI)
