Description Frank Machin has a dominating, aggressive nature that matches his powerful physique. He needs to impose himself on the outside world. He demands a trial in the local rugby team and plays with ruthlessness as well as skill. He wants people to be impressed, particularly Mrs. Hammond, a widow with two children with whom he lodges. In spite of herself she warms to his impulsive charm. Eventually however she becomes convinced that their relationship is an impossible one. Rows follow and he leaves the house to stay in a mean lodging house. Unable to stand this after a time he returns to find Mrs. Hammond in hospital. Now at last he can speak with tenderness to her but it is too late. She dies. A credit reads: "The Producers wish to thank the Management and players of Wakefield Trinity Rugby League Football Club for their generous co-operation." [BFI]
