Cinema & Sport App

Sport and Cinema: Introduction

This app examines the story of sport in European cinema as a pathway to a deeper understanding of European history, society and culture - including film form. Europe was a crucial location for the development of modern sport, from the codification of many of the world's most popular sports in the 19th century (association football, tennis, cricket) to the foundation of the Olympic games. Depictions of sport, as one of the most popular cultural practices across Europe, provide an accessible and engaging focus for examining underlying and dominant values and concerns within European society in particular periods. European sport cinema also offers a unique historical moving image record of the development of a range of distinctive sporting practices across the continent, from traditional sports like Basque pelota in Spain, to the evolution of the continent's most popular team sport, association football. Sport and Cinema have been closely connected from the very earliest days of moving images. This app will bring you through the historical development of sport on film, identifying significant technological breakthroughs along the way, and moving from an aesthetic to thematic focus as we chart the story of sport on film from pre-cinema to contemporary depictions of sport.
